Nissan will expand its Smyrna plant
Strong demand for vehicles assembled at Nissan's Smyrna plant in Tennessee has driven the company to expand production, pushing the current workforce to a near-record 8,000 people and making it one of the largest, if not the largest, plant in the world.
The Japanese carmaker is taking advantage of the good performance in the U.S. of the Leaf electric car, the Altima sedan and Rogue compact crossover.
Besides the Leaf and Rogue, the plant other new model is the Infiniti QX60 luxury crossover, similar to the Nissan Pathfinder, also assembled at Smyrna. In 2013 production capacity at Smyrna reached 484,000 vehicles.
